I AM ACTUALLY LIKE YOU (EIGENTLICH BIN ICH WIE DU) from 2009 focuses on the potential and limits of cultural diversity. Hadmut Bittiger investigates how people from different cultures live together and alongside each other in a metropolis like Berlin. Do they make a conscious effort to set themselves apart, thereby strengthening their own identity? Do they meet and mingle, generating a dynamic community? Or has multiculturalism simply failed in a segregated society?
Hadmut Bittiger interviewed her neighbors in one of Berlin’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Neukölln. Some of those exchanges were intimate private conversations, others took the form of open debates and involved pro-immigration organizations. Individual statements from these interviews were mounted onto loudspeakers. The result is a colorful and thoughtful mix of views on the state of multiculturalism in Germany, migrants’ personal hopes and fears as well as their celebration of local custom.
